Netherwitton
Netherwitton is a traditional family estate which has been owned and managed by the family since Roger de Thornton acquired the lands in 1405 and built Witton Castle.
John Trevelyan lives in the current house, Netherwitton Hall, with his wife Francesca and their family.
In 1685 Sir Nicholas Thornton commissioned the architect Robert Trollope to design a new house, which was completed in 1693. The Hall was slightly remodelled in the late 18th century following the marriage of Margaret Thornton to Walter Trevelyan, brother of Sir John Trevelyan of nearby Wallington Hall, and it has remained largely unaltered since that date.
The Netherwitton and Longwitton estates now comprise 5200 acres, including 1000 acres of forestry, together with farms and cottages.
The management of the estate is firmly focussed upon responsible, sustainable stewardship and conservation.
The Hall, holiday cottages and estate cottages in Netherwitton village are heated with biomass systems which use sustainable timber sourced from estate woodlands.
A variety of environmental schemes are in place across the estate, including a Countryside Stewardship scheme which promotes red squirrel conservation and habitat development. We are delighted to see an increasing number of red squirrels across all areas of the estate.
